How does proration work during upgrade?
How does proration work during upgrade?
Reading time: 3 min
Quick summary
During upgrade, Novalya automatically applies proration: you only pay difference between your current plan and new plan, taking into account remaining time on your current period.
Proration principle
You never pay twice
Proration ensures you don't pay twice for same period:
What is calculated:
- Price of your current plan for remaining time
- Price of new plan for same remaining time
- You only pay difference
Case 1: Monthly to monthly upgrade (higher plan)
How it works
You switch from monthly plan to higher monthly plan.
Concrete example:
- You're on Pro at $99/month
- You have 15 days remaining out of 30 in current month
- You switch to Business at $199/month
Proration calculation:
- Business price for 15 days: $199 × (15/30) = $99.50
- Pro price for 15 days: $99 × (15/30) = $49.50
- Billed proration: $99.50 - $49.50 = $50
Result:
- You pay $50 immediately
- Your renewal date stays same
- At next renewal, you'll pay $199
Diagram
Before upgrade:
- Pro plan: $99/month
- Renewed on 15th of each month
After upgrade on 1st:
- Immediate proration: $50
- New Business plan active immediately
- Next renewal: on 15th → $199
Case 2: Annual to annual upgrade (higher plan)
How it works
You switch from annual plan to higher annual plan.
Concrete example:
- You're on Starter at $441/year
- You have 6 months remaining out of 12
- You switch to Pro at $891/year
Proration calculation:
- Pro price for 6 months: $891 × (6/12) = $445.50
- Starter price for 6 months (already paid): $441 × (6/12) = $220.50
- Billed proration: $445.50 - $220.50 = $225
Result:
- You pay $225 immediately
- Your renewal date stays same
- At next renewal, you'll pay $891
Case 3: Monthly to annual upgrade
How it works
You switch from monthly subscription to annual subscription (same plan or higher plan).
Concrete example:
- You're on Pro at $99/month
- You have 20 days remaining out of 30 in current month
- You switch to annual Pro at $891/year
Proration calculation:
- Annual Pro price: $891
- Credit for 20 days already paid: $99 × (20/30) = $66
- Billed proration: $891 - $66 = $825
Result:
- You pay $825 immediately
- Your new renewal date = upgrade date + 1 year
- 25% savings vs monthly
Case 4: Upgrade with plan AND period change
How it works
You switch from monthly plan to higher annual plan.
Concrete example:
- You're on Starter at $49/month
- You have 10 days remaining out of 30
- You switch to annual Business at $1791/year
Proration calculation:
- Annual Business price: $1791
- Credit for 10 Starter days already paid: $49 × (10/30) = $16.33
- Billed proration: $1791 - $16.33 = $1774.67
Result:
- You pay $1774.67 immediately
- New renewal date = upgrade date + 1 year
- Immediate access to 1500 msg/month, 25 pipelines, 500 AI comments
Renewal date after upgrade
Two situations
Upgrade to higher plan (same period):
- Monthly → Higher monthly: Date stays same
- Annual → Higher annual: Date stays same
Upgrade with period change:
- Monthly → Annual: New date = upgrade date
- Example: Upgrade on February 26 → renewal on February 26 following year

Yes, it's calculated and applied automatically during upgrade.

No, proration is mandatory to avoid double payments.
What happens if I upgrade just before renewal?
Proration will be very low (few days only). You'll pay almost full price of new plan.
Does proration also work for add-ons?
Proration applies only to main plans, not to add-ons.
Can I get refund instead of proration?
No. System only works by credit/proration for upgrades.
